Different Lock Types and Their Purposes

Marietta LocksmithAround your home, you are likely to have a variety of needs when it comes to locking various doors and rooms. Your front door, side door, bathroom, office, and other areas, may all require different levels of security. The following article will give you an overview of the kinds of traditional lock types that are available. You may be considering changing just one type of lock or multiple locks in your home. No matter what you decide, always be sure to work with a professional lock and key expert to perform any installations you need.

Knob Locks

Knob locks are basic security locks. You likely have seen knob locks on bathroom doors and other interior locks. These types of locks are great for privacy purposes or in conjunction with a high-security lock, such as a deadbolt. Knob locks can be found on entrance and exit doors, but they should always be paired with another type of lock. By themselves, knob locks are not particularly effective for high-security means. If you do have a knob lock on any exits in your home, be sure you have a deadbolt lock installed as well.

For rooms inside of your home, knob locks are great. They keep the doorknob in place and the door locked, so even if someone were to grab the handle and try to turn the knob, it will not move. This not only makes it so that someone cannot enter a room, but also so that they are alerted that the room is being occupied. Since knob locks are most often used for privacy purposes, there is no need for them to be particularly strong against any kind of force.

Deadbolt Locks

Most apartment dwellers and homeowners are familiar with deadbolt locks. Most apartments require that every apartment have deadbolt locks and homeowners choose deadbolt locks for entry points more often than any other kind of lock. Deadbolts are highly secure and are the ideal option if you want a high-security lock without having to pay for electronic locks. Single cylinder locks are the most commonly seen type of deadbolt. On one side, you will find the key slot which belongs on the exterior side, while the interior side has a latch that one can twist in order to lock the door.

Another type of deadbolt lock you may see occasionally is called a double-cylinder deadbolt lock. Instead of having a latch on the interior side of the deadbolt, there is also another key slot. With a key slot on either side, this means that residents must use a key in order to lock the door from either side. These types of deadbolts are much more secure than a standard deadbolt lock. However, homeowners still prefer single-cylinder deadbolts because they are much more convenient to use compared to double-cylinder deadbolt locks. If you want increased security with just a deadbolt lock, however, you may want to consider upgrading to a double-cylinder deadbolt lock.

Handle Sets

If you are looking for a change from traditional deadbolt locks or want a different look for your home, you can install a lock known as a handle set. These locks come with a decorative handle and matching deadbolt lock. The handle may be attached to the deadbolt lock or detached, such as in a two-piece handle set. If you want the same security offered by a deadbolt lock, but want a different lock style on the front door of your home, picking a handle set is a great choice.

Electronic Deadbolts and Other Locks

If you have room in your budget to afford electronic or smart locks, it is recommended to do so for maximum safety and security. Electronic locks have become increasingly popular for homeowners to use. With newer models and updates being released every year, more and more individuals have been able to make the switch to smart locks. If you want to make life a little easier and have ultimate control over your home security, electronic locks are undoubtedly the way to go.

If you do decide to install smart locks for your home, be sure to work with a professional locksmith who has experience with electronic lock set-up and installations. Unlike deadbolts or knob locks, for example, electronic locks require programming and previous training to install properly. A professional lock and key expert will not only help be able to help you choose the right electronic locks for your home, but will also assist with set-up and any other future programming assistance you may need.

Ready to Install New Locks?

It is always a great idea to enlist the help of a locksmith if you are interested in changing or upgrading any locks currently in your home, vehicle, or business. Lock changes should always be performed by an expert if you want to ensure that the placement of the lock is correct and it will work as it is intended to. Know that a poorly positioned lock or improper installation could actually put you and your family at risk for a break-in. Criminals will often look for locks that are faulty or appear faulty as a point of entry. Be sure to have a professional oversee any lock installations, especially in and around your home, in order to make sure your home is not easily targeted.
